In 2015 the NSW State Government bought back both the Petroleum Explorations Licences (PELs) over Putty Valley.

Putty Valley is surrounded by World Heritage National Parks and is a catchment area for the Hawkesbury River System. Many residents were concerned when Dart Energy drilled a coal seam gas exploration core hole 500 metres from the National Park in 2011.

Rallies and protests were held and local landholders and residents were supported by environmentalists, politicians and the many friends who know the area.
