FIREY NEWS                                         By Margaret Ferguson

The fires of 2019/2020 prompted five people from the community to submit their Brigade.Congratulations and thanks are extended to all these new members.

With the wonderful wet Bush Fire Danger Period we have had in Putty so far, our crews have had a more relaxing fire season. But we all know this wont last.

The wet and cooler conditions over the last few months have seen an amazing amount of grass and scrub growth which, when dried and cured, could be the fuel for fires as the weather warms up towards the end of the year.

Take the time with the cooler weather and the winter season to prepare your property and assets. Here are some basic maintenance tips from NSWRFS

Clean your gutters of leaves and twigs, Install metal gutter guards. Attach a fire sprinkler system on your roof to flood gutters.

Repair damaged or replace missing roofing on any building.

Install fine metal mesh screens on windows and doors. Fit seals around doors and windows to eliminate gaps.

Enclose the areas under the house or sheds. Repair or cover gaps in external walls.
Keep lawns short and gardens well maintained. Cut back trees and shrubs overhanging buildings. Clean up fallen leaves, twigs and debris around the property.

Have hoses long enough to reach around your house

If you have a pool, tank or dam, put a Static Water Supply (SWS) sign on your property entrance, so firefighters know where they can get water.

Check and maintain adequate levels of home and contents insurance. Ensure it is up to date.

There is plenty of information available on the NSWRFS site following.
